Identify Equipment Batch Numbers
I need to get the last 4 digits of the 'Equipment Serial Number' to check against a recall list.
=RIGHT(B2, 4) How it works: The RIGHT function extracts a specified number of characters from the end (right side) of a text string. In this scenario, `B2` refers to the cell containing the full equipment serial number, and `4` specifies that we want to extract the last four characters. This allows the Safety Officer to quickly isolate the batch number for efficient cross-referencing with recall lists.
Data Setup
| Equipment ID | Equipment Serial Number |
|---|---|
| EQ001 | SN-XYZ-1234 |
| EQ002 | SN-ABC-5678 |
| EQ003 | SN-DEF-9012 |
| EQ004 | SN-GHI-3456 |
Step-by-Step Guide
Open your Excel spreadsheet containing the equipment serial numbers.
Select the cell where you want the extracted batch number to appear (e.g., cell C2, assuming your first serial number is in B2).
Type the formula `=RIGHT(B2, 4)` into the selected cell.
Press Enter. The last 4 digits of the serial number from B2 will now appear in C2.
To apply this formula to all other serial numbers, click on cell C2 again, then drag the fill handle (the small green square at the bottom-right corner of the cell) down to the last row of your data.
