COUNTIFS / Dean of Students

Count Detentions by Month

I need to count how many detentions were assigned in 'October' for 'Behavior'.

formula.xlsx
=COUNTIFS(A2:A8, ">=2023-10-01", A2:A8, "<=2023-10-31", C2:C8, "Behavior")

How it works: The COUNTIFS function is perfect for counting rows that meet multiple criteria simultaneously. In this formula: - `A2:A8, ">=2023-10-01"`: This is the first criterion, counting dates in the range A2:A8 that are on or after October 1, 2023. - `A2:A8, "<=2023-10-31"`: This is the second criterion, counting dates in the range A2:A8 that are on or before October 31, 2023. Together with the first criterion, this effectively filters for all dates within the month of October. - `C2:C8, "Behavior"`: This is the third criterion, counting entries in the range C2:C8 that exactly match the text 'Behavior'. COUNTIFS will only count a row if *all* specified criteria are true for that particular row, providing an accurate count of detentions for 'Behavior' in 'October'.

Data Setup

Date Student Name Reason Teacher
2023-10-05 Alice Smith Behavior Mr. Johnson
2023-09-12 Bob White Academic Ms. Davis
2023-10-10 Charlie Brown Behavior Mr. Johnson
2023-11-01 Diana Prince Behavior Ms. Davis
2023-10-15 Eve Adams Academic Mr. Smith
2023-10-20 Frank Green Behavior Mr. Johnson
2023-09-25 Grace Lee Behavior Ms. Davis

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Identify the columns containing the 'Date' and 'Reason' for detentions in your data (e.g., Column A for Date, Column C for Reason).

2

Determine the exact start and end dates for the target month (e.g., October 1, 2023, to October 31, 2023).

3

In an empty cell where you want the result, enter the COUNTIFS formula: `=COUNTIFS(A2:A8, ">=2023-10-01", A2:A8, "<=2023-10-31", C2:C8, "Behavior")`.

4

Press Enter to execute the formula and display the total count of detentions matching both criteria.
