Check Asset Tag Validity

As an IT Admin, I need to quickly verify the validity of laptop asset tags by extracting the last character, which serves as a checksum digit. This helps in identifying potential data entry errors or corrupted IDs in our asset inventory, ensuring all assets are correctly tracked.

=RIGHT(A2, 1)

How it works: The RIGHT function extracts a specified number of characters from the end of a text string. In this scenario, `RIGHT(A2, 1)` tells Excel to look at the text in cell A2 and return only the last character (1 character from the right). This allows the IT Admin to isolate the checksum digit for validation purposes, ensuring that the asset tag conforms to the expected format and integrity rules, which is crucial for accurate inventory management.

Data Setup

Laptop ID

LPT-002-B
LPT-003-C
LPT-004-D
LPT-005-E

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Open your asset inventory spreadsheet in Excel.

2

Locate the column containing the 'Laptop ID' (e.g., Column A).

3

In an adjacent empty column (e.g., Column B), enter the formula `=RIGHT(A2, 1)` in the first data row (assuming A2 contains the first Laptop ID).

4

Press Enter to see the extracted checksum digit.

5

Drag the fill handle down to apply the formula to all other Laptop IDs in your list.

6

You can then compare this extracted checksum with a known valid checksum or use conditional formatting to highlight discrepancies, ensuring data integrity.
